Do I really need an EV charger at home? (Why “Mode 2” charging might be perfect for you)

What is a Mode 2 Car Charger? Well, a Mode 2 charging plug or adaptor is simply a slower way to charge your EV… So, this is a charging adaptor that you can plug in to an ordinary 3 pin plug socket. Of course, it’s best to have this outside where your car is and so long as you can isolate the socket (with a switched on/off) from somewhere in your home you’re safe in the knowledge that it’s only your car getting the power it needs!

So, not everyone with an electric car needs a fancy wallbox. In fact, if you only use your EV once or twice a week—for local trips to the shops or visiting family—a simple outdoor socket might be all you need. This is what's known as Mode 2 charging.
So, what is Mode 2 EV charging?
Mode 2 charging just means using the standard 3-pin plug that came with your car. You plug it into a regular socket, and it charges your car slowly and steadily - usually overnight. It’s safe if the socket is properly installed with the right protections in place, including an RCD (residual current device).
Why is Mode 2 EV Charging ideal for low-mileage drivers
If you're not clocking up miles every day, there's no real benefit in paying for a full-on charging unit. Here’s why Mode 2 might be your best bet:
✅ Cost-effective – No need to spend hundreds on a wall-mounted charger you’ll barely use.
✅ Less disruption – A quick installation of a weatherproof socket means minimal fuss or mess.
✅ Perfectly adequate – You’ll still get a full charge overnight if you're only topping up now and then.
✅ Tidy and safe – Installed professionally, these sockets are built to last and keep everything safe outdoors.
Real example from a recent job
I recently helped a customer in Frome (see video above) who’d bought a small electric runaround. She only uses it for shopping and the odd appointment, and didn’t want to invest in a full EV charger. We installed a neat outdoor socket close to her driveway, and now she just plugs in with her Mode 2 cable when needed. Simple, clean, and works a treat.
A few things to keep in mind:
The socket must be weatherproof
The circuit must be RCD protected
Always use the manufacturer-supplied charging cable - not a cheap knock-off.
Thinking about charging your EV at home?
If you’re in Chilcompton, Frome, Wells, Shepton Mallet, Midsomer Norton, Radstock or any nearby areas and want to talk through your options, give me a shout. I’ll always recommend what’s right for your situation - not what’s trendy or top-spec for the sake of it.
No pushy sales, just honest advice and properly done work.
