Why Install an EV Charger at Home?
Having a dedicated EV charging point at home makes owning an electric car considerably more convenient. You can plug the car in when you get home and have it ready when you need it again.

A properly installed home charger also provides a dedicated charging solution designed specifically for the demands of charging an electric vehicle.

Before installing anything, I'll check your existing electrical installation and discuss how and when you normally charge your car. This helps me recommend a solution that works for your home rather than simply fitting whichever charger happens to be popular.

Which EV Charger Should I Choose?
There are plenty of EV chargers available, and choosing between them can be confusing.
​
The right charger will depend on your vehicle, where you park, your electricity supply, your energy tariff and the features that are important to you.
​
I'll talk you through the options and help you choose a charger that suits the way you intend to use it. That might include considering smart charging, solar compatibility, load management, tethered or untethered charging and how you'd like the charger to look on your property.

My aim isn't to sell you the most expensive charger – it's to help you choose the right one.​​​​
Tethered or Untethered EV Charger?
Tethered Charger
​
A tethered charger has its charging cable permanently attached. It's convenient because you simply park up, take the cable from the charger and plug it into the car.

Untethered Charger
​
An untethered charger has a socket rather than a permanently attached cable. You connect your own charging cable when you need it, which can give a neater appearance when the charger isn't being used.
​
There's no single right choice. I'll help you consider the practical differences and choose whichever suits you and your property best.

Can I have an EV charger at my house?
In many homes, yes – but every property needs to be considered individually.

Before installing an EV charger, I'll assess your existing electrical installation, the available electrical supply, where the vehicle is parked and the most suitable route for the cabling.
​
I'll also consider the additional electrical demand created by the charger and whether load management or other measures may be required. As part of the installation process, I'll notify the relevant Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and provide the information needed to assess your property's electrical demand.
​
In some cases, the DNO may require a load management device to be installed. If this applies to your property, I'll explain what it means and include it in the quotation before any work goes ahead.
Once I've assessed everything, I'll explain what I recommend and provide a clear quotation before the installation goes ahead.
What happens during installation?
1. Initial Assessment

We'll discuss your vehicle, charging requirements and where you'd like the charger installed.

2. Electrical Checks
​
I'll assess your existing electrical installation and supply to make sure the proposed installation is suitable.
​
3. Charger & Cable Route
​
We'll agree the position of the charger and the most practical route for the electrical cable.
​
4. Installation
​
I'll install the charger and the necessary electrical equipment carefully and tidily.
​
5. Testing & Setup
​
Once installed, I'll test the electrical installation and help get the charger set up ready for use.
​
6. Certification
​
I'll complete the appropriate electrical certification and any required notifications associated with the installation.

EV Charger Installations That Suit Your Home
An EV charger doesn't have to look like an afterthought.

Where possible, I'll consider the appearance of the finished installation as well as the electrical requirements. That includes thinking carefully about the position of the charger, cable routes and how everything will look once the job is finished.

Every property is different, so I'm happy to discuss different options rather than automatically choosing the quickest route.

The Easee One is one of my favourite EV chargers - the app and customisability of this unit is makes it a perfect option for any home or business. This customer in Stoke St Michael, Somerset, wanted a white cover to match their house!
The BG Sync is one of the most budget friendly chargers out there, and is untethered. However, it's still packed with great SMART features such as scheduling. I also feel that it's a nice looking charger, this was installed in Priddy, Somerset.
The Easee ONE in black! This is an untethered unit, which is one reason why many customers go for this option, this was installed in Chilcompton, Radstock.
An outdoor Consumer Unit that was installed for a Hypervolt EV Charger - this was installed in Frome, Somerset. The client wanted the charger nearer the garage as the car is reversed onto the drive.

How Long Does an EV Charger Installation Take?
Many straightforward home EV charger installations can be completed within a day, although the time required will depend on the property, cable route, existing electrical installation and any additional work that's needed.

I'll assess what's involved beforehand and give you a good idea of what to expect when I provide your quotation.
​
If anything unusual is likely to make the installation more involved, I'll discuss this with you before the work goes ahead.
How Much Does a Home EV Charger Installation Cost?
The cost will depend on the charger you choose, where it's being installed, the cable route and whether any additional electrical work is required.

Rather than advertising a headline price that may not apply to your property, I prefer to understand what's actually involved and provide a clear quotation for the complete installation.
​
That way you'll know what's included before deciding whether you'd like to go ahead.

Can I charge my EV from a normal socket?
A dedicated EV charging point is specifically designed for regularly charging an electric vehicle and is the solution I'd normally recommend for home charging.

If you're currently charging another way and aren't sure what's appropriate, I'm happy to discuss your setup and advise you.
Do I need a 7kW charger?
7kW chargers are common for domestic installations, but the right charging solution depends on your vehicle, electrical supply and how you use the car.

I'll consider these factors before recommending a charger rather than assuming that the same solution is right for every home.
Will I need a new consumer unit?
Not necessarily.

I'll assess your existing electrical installation as part of planning the EV charger installation. If alterations or upgrades are required, I'll explain why and discuss them with you before any additional work goes ahead.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. I'll carry out the appropriate testing and provide the electrical certification required for the installation.

I'll also explain any other notifications or paperwork that apply to your particular installation.
Can my EV charger work with solar panels?
Some EV chargers can be configured to work with compatible solar installations, allowing you to make use of surplus solar generation when conditions allow.

Can you install the charger away from the house?
Potentially, yes. Depending on the property, an EV charger may be installed on a garage, outbuilding or suitable mounting post rather than directly on the house.
