Bathroom Electrical Zones Explained – A Recent Job in Stoke St Michael

This week I completed a bathroom electrical installation for a customer in Stoke St Michael, near Radstock, as part of a bathroom renovation.
The job involved installing a new extractor fan in Zone 1 and connecting the new electric shower. While these might seem like straightforward installations, bathrooms are one of the most regulated rooms in your home when it comes to electrical safety.
Electrical Zones Explained: Why are bathrooms divided into zones?
Water and electricity don't mix, so the UK Wiring Regulations divide bathrooms into different safety zones and this is why electrical zones explained is doing this particular round. These zones determine what electrical equipment can be installed and where.
On this particular job, the extractor fan was located in Zone 1 – the area directly above the shower up to 2.25 metres from the floor.
Because of this, I couldn't simply fit any extractor fan. It had to be:
Suitable for installation in Zone 1.
Have the correct IP (Ingress Protection) rating to protect it from water.
Be wired and protected in accordance with the current edition of BS 7671 (the UK Wiring Regulations).
Installed so it operates safely and reliably for years to come.
Installing the new shower
As part of the same project, I also completed the electrical connection for the new shower.
Electric showers draw a significant amount of power, so it's important that the electrical supply is correctly designed and installed. This includes ensuring the cable size, protective devices and circuit protection are all suitable for the load of the shower.
Taking shortcuts with shower installations can lead to nuisance tripping, overheating cables or, in the worst cases, serious safety risks.
Why it pays to use a qualified electrician
A lot of customers are surprised when I explain that you can't simply buy any light, fan or electrical accessory and fit it wherever you like in a bathroom.
The location determines what's permitted, and choosing the wrong product can mean it isn't compliant or safe to install.
