Why MIGHT My Light Fitting Need a CPC (Earth Wire)?

Some older lighting circuits don’t have a CPC (Circuit Protective Conductor) – commonly known as the earth wire. While this was acceptable years ago, it’s no longer considered safe for many modern light fittings - especially those that are Class I (usually made of metal or are conductive in some way).
So, why might my light fitting need an earth wire? If a light fitting has any metal parts, it must be earthed. Without a CPC, there's a risk that if a fault occurs, the metal could become live – creating a serious shock hazard.
In cases like this, I’ll either need to:
Fit a double-insulated (Class II) light that doesn’t need an earth, or upgrade the wiring to include a CPC, especially if the customer wants to fit modern metal light fittings.
It’s all about keeping you and your home safe – and making sure the installation meets current regulations.
